Woman lifting weights for bone density
Hi friend
Your bones need weight. Cardio isn’t enough.
Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough: your bones start losing density in your 30s, and it accelerates through perimenopause. Most women don’t feel it happening until something breaks — a wrist from a small fall, a hip from a slip in the driveway.

Here’s what actually protects bones: lifting weights heavy enough to stress your skeleton. Walking, yoga, and pilates are wonderful — but they don’t load your bones hard enough to build new density. Your body only builds bone in response to a challenge it isn’t already handling every day.

The research is clear: moderate-to-heavy resistance training, two or three times a week, focused on three lifts — squats, deadlifts, and a pressing movement. Powerlifters have some of the highest bone densities ever recorded, and it’s because they train these three exclusively.

On the blog this week I broke down the exact three lifts, the safe progression from bodyweight all the way to barbell, and how heavy is heavy enough for bone-building (spoiler: probably heavier than you think).

Overnight Chia Berry Bone Bowl
Makes 1 · Time 5 min (+ overnight) · Protein 12g · Calcium 40% DV
Ingredients: 3 tbsp chia seeds, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or cow’s milk), 1 tsp maple syrup, 1/2 cup mixed berries, 2 tbsp sliced almonds, 1 tbsp pomegranate seeds
Method: (1) Whisk chia seeds, milk, and maple syrup in a jar until no clumps. (2) Refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight until it thickens to pudding. (3) Top with berries, sliced almonds, and pomegranate seeds.
Why this works for women 50+: Chia seeds alone deliver more calcium ounce-for-ounce than milk, plus omega-3s and fiber. Topped with almonds, berries, and pomegranate, one bowl gives you the bone-supporting nutrients your body needs after 50 — as a make-ahead breakfast.

LIFESTYLE & STYLE
September is the best month for one investment piece: a proper leather ankle boot. Not booties, not combat boots — an elegant Chelsea or a low-block-heel ankle boot that will actually last five winters. I bought a pair of Everlane Chelseas three years ago and they’ve been to weddings, farmers markets, and airplane flights. Cost per wear: pennies. Look for real leather (not “vegan leather” which is plastic), a low stacked heel under two inches, and a shape that ends at the ankle bone, not below it.

Takeaway: Buy one great boot instead of three mediocre pairs. Your fall wardrobe basically writes itself around it.
MIDLIFE TRUTH
You cannot supplement your way to strong bones. You have to earn them, one heavy set at a time.
